images of my friends | GRACE & LAW
an artist’s statement by larry d. rosalez (2nd row, 3rd column)
REAL, RAW, ORGANIC <———- these are the qualities i set out for this photo series to embody. but, somewhere in my life, i decided that organic meant “without conscious governance,” and that real meant “unbound spontaneity.” i horribly under-estimated the amount of effort, editing, and conscious decision-making required to produce something that would be both raw and pleasantly coherent.
the same meticulous patterns of cell biology bound and frame every tree, but every branch grows freely and no two leaves are exactly alike. i took cues from this balance of strictly governed-similarity and spontaneous-individuality that exists in every created entity: snowflakes, starfish, celestial bodies, coffee beans, nimbus clouds, tulips, emeralds, and people.
[simple subject matter, simple framing, simple presentation]
to navigate that divine pattern of structure and freedom, i set some controls (only portrait, only sunlight, only friends, only color images, etc) and left other variables uncontrolled (time of day, clothing, location, etc.) to maintain some nearness to “raw” i decided not to use models, not to create scenarios, and not to use photoshop to edit the photos (that’s not to say the photos are unedited; the act of framing a real thing to make an image of a thing is editing enough on it’s own).
this mechanical methodology forced me to deconstruct my own aesthetic value system in order to find a new balance between effort & release and to discover images rather than direct them.
this series helped me cultivate a more nuanced understanding of the relationships between organic & methodical, real & framed, raw & controlled and, consequently, GRACE & LAW.
this series is on display at pascale’s, a coffee shop in gainesville, fl. i’m planning a reception for september so stay tuned for updates on that and, until then, if you’re in gainesville, feel free to check it out. the portraits are part of a larger series you can find at heforgaveme.tumblr.com
